We rode up the difficult climb to Santa Maria de Jesus to discover that none of the folks there felt it would be safe for us to ride down to Palin on the very quiet dirt road. So Nancy hired a pickup, and thus we ended our first day out! It all looked quite do-able, although the dirt road was quite bad, not the "secondary road" marked on my map.
